ngo5 soeng6 nin2 zau6 lei4 zo2 sai1 nga5 tou4 ge3 ni1 go3 waa4 sing6 deon6 daai6 hok6 duk6 syu1
Last year I came to Seattle and have been studying at the University of Washington.
waa4 sing6 deon6 daai6 hok6 le1+ zau6 hai6 go3 hou2 dei6 fong1 laa1, ni1 dou6 jau5 wu4 ging2 aa3 zung6 jau5 jing1 faa1 tai2 gam2 joeng2
University of Washington is a good place (to visit). There are lakes and cherry blossoms to appreciate.
m4 zi1 hai6 mai6 jan1 wai6 ngo5 dei6 hok6 haau6 kwong3 ziu1 le1 ding6 hai6 jan1 wai6 zong1 gwok3 jan4 bun2 san1 zau6 jyut6 lei4 jyut6 zung1 ji3 ceot1 gwok3 duk6 syu1
I dont know whether it is because our university extends its enrollment or Chinese people becomes keener and keener to study abroad
ji1 gaa1 ngo5 zan1 hai6 hai2 hok6 haau6 zau1 gai1 dou1 ho2 ji3 gin3 dou2 jau5 zung1 gwok3 jan4, daan6 hai6 daai6 bou6 fan6 ge3 zung1 gwok3 jan4 le1+ keoi5 dou1 hai6 m4 sik1 gong2 jyut6 jyu5 ge3
Now we can see many Chinese people around campus, but most of them cant speak Cantonese.
Bat1 gwo3 hou2 coi2 hai2 tong4 jan4 gaai1 go2 bin6 ge3 cing4 fong3 zung6 saau2 wai4 hou2 di1, gei1 bun2 soeng6 le1+ go2 bin6 hou2 do1 dim3 ge3 lou5 baan2 aa3 tung4 maai4 fo2 gei3 aa3 dou1 hai6 sik1 gong2 jyut6 jyu5 ge3
However, luckily the situation in Chinatown is a little bit better. Many shopkeepers and shop assistants there are able to speak Cantonese.
gei3 ak1(dak1) jau5 jat1 ci3 ngo5 tung4 ngo5 baan1, e6, kei4 taa1 dei6 fong1 lei4 ge3 zung1 gwok3 tung4 hok6 heoi3 tong6 jan6 gaai1 go2 bin6 daa2 bin1 lou4
I remember one time I went with my Chinese schoolmates from other areas to Chinatown for hotpot.
gan1 zyu6 o3(go3) fuk6 mou6 jyun4 zau6 bei2 o2(zo2) fan6 coi3 daan1 bei2 ngo5 dei6 tai2, ji4(jin4) hau6 ngo5 zau6 faat3 jin6 ni1 fan6 coi3 daan1 soeng6 jau5 hou2 do1 ci4 kei4 a6(sat6) dou1 hai6 jyut6 jyut5 ci4 lei4 ge3
Then a waiter gave us a menu, and I found there were many Cantonese vocabularies in the menu
Bei2 jyu4 me1+ zyu1 jeon2 zyu1 hung4 zyu1 jiu1 zi1 leoi6 ge3, so2 ji5 ngo5 baan1 tung4 hok6 zung6 jiu4 tai2 faan1 jing1 man2 sin1 zi1 keoi5 hai6 me1+ ji3 si1+
such as pork liver, pork blood, pork kidney, and so on. So, my schoolmates could just understand what they are by reading their English translations.
Bat1 gwo3 o5(ngo5) dou1 faat3 jin6 ni1 dou6 hou2 do1 gwong2 dong1 jan4 dou1 waak6 do1 waak6 siu2 gam2 hok6 zo2 jat1 hau2 m4 haam4 m4 taam5 ge3 pou2 dong1(tong1) waa2
However, I have also found that many Cantonese people there have more or less learned Mandarin with some accent.
gei1 bun2 soeng6 keoi5 dei6 tung4 kei4 taa1 jan4 jung6 pou2 dong1(tung1) waa2 gaau1 lau4 dou1 hai6 mou5 me1 hou2 daai6 man6 tai4 ge3
Basically they can communicate with others in Mandarin without significant barrier.
m... so2 ji5 ngo5 dou1 hou2 ji3 tai2 dak1 ceot1 le1+ pou2 tung1 waa2 hai2 hoi2 ngoi6 (ge3) dei6 wai6 dik1 kok3 hai6 jyut6 lei4 jyut6 gou1+, ji4 ce2 zung6 ci5 fu4 zuk6 zim6 gam2 ceoi2 doi6 gan2 gwong2 zau1 waa2 hai2 hoi2 ngoi6 e3(ge3) dei6 wai6
Hmm... Thus, I can also see that the overseas position of Mandarin is certainly rising and rising. It seems Mandarin is also replacing the overseas position of Cantonese.

Join Hong Kong Student Association at UW! They have hangouts and stuff where you can practice and teach others Cantonese.

Also, a lot of students at the UW are foreign exchange students from China, therefore, many of them speak Mandarin. The majority of Cantonese speakers, at least in my experience, tend to be recent immigrants from Guangdong or of Vietnamese descent. I think it is because many Chinese parents prefer to have their children speak Mandarin, so the ability to speak Cantonese is lost.
