wǒ kěyǐ shuō yī diǎn
I can tell a
táiwānhuà gēn pǔtōnghuà de xiàohuà
yīnwèi wǒ yǒu yī ge péngyou
because I had a friend
who’d just come from the mainland, from China to Taiwan.
He lived together with friends,
他每天
and every day
he wanted to go to the barber (lifa),
but to his friends,
he said ’how about you guys take me to the barber (lifa)?
But in Taiwanese ’barber’ (lifa) means...
’barber’ (lifa) means...
I’m sorry, I’m not telling this too
clearly. Because, in Taiwanese,
chūqù wán a jiào "tshit-thô"(qìtó), "tit-thô"(tìtó)
you say ’get your head shaved’ (thit-tô, tìtó) to mean
Nàme pǔtōnghuà jiǎng “lǐfā” kěyǐ jiǎng “tìtóu”
In Mandarin you can say ’get your head shaved' (titou) to mean 'barber' (lifa).
So his friend said, ’sure, you want to "go out for a good time" (titou), we’ll take you,'
and that night they went out and had a good time, then came back.
He didn’t dare ask why they hadn’t gone to the barber (lifa) together, and the second day
he said ’I want to go get my head shaved (titou)', and they said ’sure sure sure, we’ll go together.
So they went out and had good time again, so,
on the third day it went the same way--he was just baffled.
[He said] ’I want to go get my head shaved (titou), I want to get my hair cut!’
O, tìtóu a, búshì chūqù chūqù wán na
[They said] ’Oh, "get your head shaved" (titou), not "go out for a good time".
Wǒmen Táiwān huà wán shì jiào "thit-thô" (tìtó) wa
In Taiwanese we say "titou" to mean "go out for a good time".
Sounds a lot like your "getting your head shaved" (titou), eh?’ That’s the joke.
And I’ve got a ton of them--if you want to hear more, what say we leave those for next time!
